SLU hosts forum on nat’l crisis

BAGUIO CITY (Aug. 6) — A forum on the national political situation was held this week at the SLU Center for Culture and the Arts (CCA) Theater to enlighten the Baguio citizenry on the crisis of the presidency. Over 1,000 individuals attended the forum, which was organized by the SLU Social Action Committee (SAC), students, faculty members and non-academic employees.

Resource persons laid down the basis for the snowballing call for Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s (GMA) resignation. Bayan Muna National Vice Chair Manuel Loste said that the Arroyo administration no longer has the credibility to run the country given not only the serious allegations that had shook GMA’s leadership, but also the worsening situation of the Filipino nation as a whole.

Atty. Gina Alvarez of the Committee for the Defense of Lawyers (CODAL) gave an analogy, stressing that “anything that is morally wrong can never be politically right”. She also reiterated the importance of the youth to make a stand and to take action in this issue for they are also directly affected by the political crisis.

Bishop Carlito Cenzon of the Baguio-Benguet Vicariate clarified that the stand of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) should not be misinterpreted. He said that they were never neutral on the issue. “Let’s forgive but let GMA be accountable for any wrong doing.” The approach according to him should be taken constitutionally in the process of impeachment.

Meanwhile, Atty. Abelardo Estrada, president of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Baguio-Benguet, discussed the means to unseat the president. He said that the unseating may either be in the form of impeachment, resignation or ouster.

During the forum, members of Gabriela Youth distributed survey forms asking the participants whether Arroyo should resign or remain. Results show that out of 388 respondents, 71% are for Arroyo’s resignation, 36% want Arroyo to stay while 3 individuals chose to be neutral. # Glehna France de los Reyes for NORDIS
