Mt. Province folk act vs. dengue spread |
||
TADIAN, Mountain Province (Aug. 6) — Residents of Tadian town in this province acted together to contain further spread of dengue through an information dissemination campaign on precautionary measures to prevent contacting the infection. Ninety dengue cases were documented in this town already, including that of a four-year old boy, who recently died. Tadian Vice Mayor Febe Sally said that 59 cases were documented in Poblacion, 14 in Masla, 13 in Kayan East, four in Tue. Monitoring by the Task Force Dengue reveals that there are no reported cases yet in Tadian’s other 15 barangays based. The local government established the task force with the participation of village leaders, various sectors, including non-government organizations. Tadian lies in western Mt. Province and is inhabited by the Kankanaey. It is 136 kilometers away from Baguio City. Community cooperation “The communities have been very active in the campaign,” said Sally, adding that “residents come in full attendance in meetings called for the discussion of the epidemic and the measures that they can adopt to contain the epidemic.” Sally said that the decline in the number of cases could be due to the effective information dissemination and surveillance to report any suspected case. She added that the communities have been cleaning up and applying chemical fogging on suspected mosquito lairs. Residents interviewed expressed satisfaction towards the concerted action of the communities and the local government. Sally said that the regional office of the Department of Health (DOH) is set to visit the area to monitor the development and impact of the concerted action. She added that they sought the assistance of the different government offices, including the provincial office of the congressman. Other public and private institutions based in Baguio have extended help to the Tadian people. The Sangguniang Bayan of this municipality adopted on July 16 Resolution No. 62, series of 2005 to declare the municipality under the state of calamity, allowing Tadian to avail of government funds to address the problem. What is dengue? Dengue is an acute, contagious infection caused by a virus that is transmitted by the aedes aegypti mosquito, the same mosquito that spreads yellow fever. It usually occurs in epidemic form in the tropics and in the temperate zones. The symptoms of the disease are characterized by the sudden onset of fever, headache, and generalized fatique. The Philippines has not been able to systematically address this epidemic as only a little amount has been appropriated from the national budget, organizations of community health workers claim. Foreign debt servicing, they claim, tops the highest budget allocation. # Arthur L. Allad-iw for NORDIS |
