Two miners meet mishap in strike ridden Lepanto

MANKAYAN, Benguet (July 5)— Members of the Lepanto Employees Union (LEU) confirmed this week that two miners were injured in the underground and surface operations of the Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company (LCMCo) here.

A project employee, hired by the company at the height of the strike, fell due to slippery grounds inside the Nayak Twin Tunnel on July 1. The victim, Carlo Domyung, was required to have his toe amputated. He is reportedly at the company hospital as of presstime.

In the early morning of July 4, a certain Mr. Dewan was brought to the Baguio General Hospital (BGH) due to a fractured leg while at work. Workers picketing the company’s Gate 4 leading to the mill site said they saw company security forces carrying Dewan whose leg was then bandaged. At the time of commotion, workers said the Philippine National Police (PNP) swooped down on the picket line at around 2 a.m. and started tearing off the tents.

LEU President Ninian K. Lang-agan said that the company is trying to cover up the accidents so that prospective applicants will not be discouraged from applying. Lepanto has been hiring new workers since June, from as far as the Visayas to replace the striking workers.

Lang-agan advised would-be applicants not to be deceived by Lepanto’s recruiters.

“Kadagiti kakailian a maaw-awis a sumrek nga agtrabaho ditoy Lepanto, saan a natalged ti kasasaad iti underground. Ket saan kayo a nakaseguro a bayadan dakayo ti usto ti kompanya nu adda mapasamak kadakayo. Dakamin tupay a regular ket saan a mabayadan nga usto nu adda maaksidente kadakami, kas-ano ngayen nu dakayo a saan a regular.” (To our province mates who are being convinced to enter as new workers here in Lepanto, the conditions in the underground tunnels are not safe. There is no assurance that the company will compensate you properly if accidents happen to you. If regular employees like us are not properly compensated, how much more to non-regular workers like you?) Lang-agan added. # Aldwin Quitasol for NORDIS
