Land dispute triggers Sadanga folks’ death

TABUK, Kalinga (July 20) — Another land dispute triggered the death of two Sadanga tribesmen here on June 29 at around 8:30 a.m.

Jose Binay-og and Noel Binay-og, both residents of Maledda-Ipil, Tabuk, were shot by five unidentified men on the said date.

According to Maledda elders, the Bacani Binay-og family tills a two-hectare riceland at Matuknang-Ipil, Tabuk, having bought it from Kandido Saropen of Pingad, Mt. Province in the early 90s. However, some members of the Naneng tribe also in Tabuk have been claiming ownership to the land for the past six years already. A hearing was scheduled at July 5 on the land dispute.

On June 28, the Binay-og family noticed four men, with rifles and wearing bonnets, near the disputed land. They called up policemen for security assistance at the Bulanao Police Sub-station. Policemen came and advised the Binay-og family to “watch themselves”. The following day, the Binay-og family waited for the policemen to escort them to the farm. When the police did not arrive, the Binay-og family proceeded to the farm, where Noel and Jose were killed.

The policemen recovered two motorcycles at the area of incident, believing that these belong to the perpetrators.

This week, the Sadanga tribesmen in Maledda accepted the “papod”, a carabao, offered to them by the Naneng tribe. The “papod” would signify that the i-Sadanga will not avenge the death of the victims, and that talks regarding the resolution of the case would take place 7 days after. # Richard Membrot for NORDIS
