175 join Easter College 1st capping, pinning ceremony

BAGUIO CITY (June 23) — One hundred seventy five student nurses participated in the first capping, pinning, and candle lighting ceremony of the Easter College Inc. (ECI) held at the Holy Innocent’s Episcopal Church on June 18, 2005.

Before an audience of over 600 individuals, guest speaker Dr. Erlinda Palaganas discussed caring, as it would be one of the main tasks of the would-be nurses. Palaganas defined caring ss the process through which nurses help others in their healing and self- growth; the therapeutic use of self in an intentional process that involves the awareness of other’s needs and the knowledge of how to respond to that need and having deep respect for life and the power of human change.

A registered nurse, Palaganas is the governor of the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) Region 1 and chairperson of the PNA Region 1 Council.

She added that “caring is a heavily laden concept, since it entails committed and unwavering dedication to care not only for the people we serve but to the profession and to oneself It radiates the hallmarks to the profession of nursing for it signifies the call to life service and acceptance to the invitation to make a difference in this world.”

Palaganas urged the participants to let the symbols of their profession guide them.

“The white uniform signifies purity of intentions for service and love for humanity, the caps will not just be a piece of cloth or the pin, a piece of metal”, she said. She added that nursing, as a vocation, should also embrace the symbols of selflessness and dedication.

“May you succeed in your mission to be a caring nurse... a nurse with compassion, competence, confidence, conscience, commitment towards excellent service to humanity to mark a new beginning,.. dare to care and dare to reach for your dreams, she ended.

A mass was celebrated earlier by Bishop Joel A, Pachao and Rev. Gabriel C. Yangyang. # Elaine B. Batnag for NORDIS
