Dads, police claim La Trinidad jueteng free LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (June 1) — Local officials and the municipal police station here, claimed during the weekly Kapihan sa Benguet that this town is now free from jueteng and any form of illegal gambling. Mayor Nestor Fongwan said that concerned authorities succeeded in curbing the illegal numbers game in the locality, more so that the directive came from the top management of the Philippine National Police. According to La Trinidad Chief of Police Jesse Perez, representatives from the municipal government, church and farmers signed a certification with the local police that jueteng does not exist here. # Kim Quitasol for NORDIS * * * * * Driver, two passengers hurt in truck crash BAGUIO CITY (June 1) — Two passengers and the driver of a Baguio-bound 10-wheeler truck were rushed to the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC) for injuries after their vehicle skidded and fell off a 20-meter ravine several minutes before 5 a.m. Wednesday along Brgy. Palina, Tuba town, Benguet. Truck driver Roberto de Vera and passenger Roger Latopang are now being treated for injuries and attending physicians have conducted an x-ray to check for bone displacements and other injuries. Another passenger, Jonathan de Guzman, sustained minor injuries said Vicente Tomazar, regional chief of the Office of Civil Defense-Cordillera. All three, added Tomazar are from Guyo, Sta Maria town, Bulacan province. The 10-wheeler truck with plate number WFE 399, was transporting assorted merchandise from Manila. Authorities are still probing the cause of the truck mishap. The incident came after a lowland-bound minibus turned turtle also along Marcos Highway in Sitio Bontiway, poblacion, Tuba, also in Benguet instantly killing 27 passengers including its driver. The death toll later on rose to 29 when two others died at the hospital. # Artemio A. Dumlao for NORDIS * * * * * La Trinidad bags Guinness record feat LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (June 1) — La Trinidad, the country’s strawberry capital, finally bagged the Guinness Book of World Record’s World’s Largest Fruit Shortcake title after two unsuccessful attempts. The record-breaking strawberry shortcake weighed 9,642.45 kilograms and measured 12.31 feet long, 8.42 feet high and 8.69 feet wide. It had an average diameter of 9.18 feet. The dimensions were certified by the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers and Institute (PICE) Baguio-Benguet. According to the Institute of Certified Public Accountants said strawberry cake had a total of 42,080 slices served to droves of cake-eating residents and amused local and foreign tourists. The feat was baked and showed to the public on March 20, last year during the La Trinidad Strawberry Festival at the La Trinidad town Plaza hall witnessed by hundreds of revelers, residents and journalists. La Trinidad Mayor Nestor Fongwan said the cake required 2,000 kilos of fresh strawberries, 675 kilos of strawberry jam and 1,550 bottles of strawberry extract. The ingredients included 1,500 bars of butter, 1,625 kilos of sugar, 9,000 pieces of eggs, 860 cans of evaporated milk, 1,155 kilos of flour, 20 kilos of baking powder, 10 kilos of salt and 250 liters of whipped cream for the icing.
