QCPSTA holds 4th leadership seminar |
||
BAGUIO CITY (May 21) — More than 160 teachers from public elementary and high schools of Quezon City attended the Quezon City Public Schools Teachers Association’s (QCPSTA) 4th Leadership Training Seminar at La Consolacion Villa at Camp 7 this week. The three-day seminar focused on the teacher’s role as a catalyst for change through education. The seminar also aimed to empower teachers through education discussions and lectures on their democratic rights as teachers. France Castro, president of QCPSTA said that through these seminars, teachers become more aware of the condition of the society, and its relation to the education sector. “Teachers also become aware of how they should deal with the issues that affect them”, she said. In an intrerview, Castro commented on the Department of Education (DepEd) statement saying it does not worry about teachers going abroad. She also added that although the country has a lot of graduates that could fill those positions, the DepEd does not have to budget to hire the number of teachers that is needed. According to Castro, the country needs some 57,000 teachers. Castro also said that due to budget constraints, some teachers are contractual, where benefits as are not available. Castro added that nowadays, schools do not hire teachers to replace those who are on maternity leave. The load or the classes of the teachers on leave are distributed to other teachers. The salaries of the teachers stay the same but their workload becomes larger, she added. The QCPSTA will join a mobilization on June 6 at Mendiola along with the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT), and other organizations in the education sector to reiterate their demand for a P3,000 across the board salary increase for government employees. # Kristine Marie Torres for NORDIS |
