Village chief shot dead

VILLASIS, Pangasinan (May 19) — This Friday the 13th was an unlucky day for a village chief here who was shot dead after watching a basketball game.

Barangay Onzad Chief Cesar Macanas, 45, was shot dead by still unidentified lone gunman near Villasis Gymnasium at 10:20 a.m. He was about to board his motorcycle after a talk with ex-mayor Ramon Morden when the suspect, who was seen earlier in the area, without any provocation fired at him.

Villagers mauled the suspect but he was able to escape by indiscriminately firing at the angry mob. Injured was Jeffrey Saldivar, 21, of Barangay Bacag.

The suspect fled in a Suzuki motorcycle driven by another companion who served as a look-out.

The police were able to recover an empty shell of .45 caliber pistol. The police said the motive could have been an old grudge with village mates.

On May 6, two unidentified motorcycle-riding men attempted to kill Barangay Palina chief Melchor Corpuz of Urdaneta City while the latter was on his way home from a cockfight.# Jhong dela Cruz for NORDIS
