BIR collections UP BY 43.7% BAGUIO CITY (May 13) — The Bureau of Internal Revenue reported this week that tax collections rose by 43.7% during the last day of income tax filing on April 15 Tax collections amounted to P21.340 billion, from the P14.882 billion collected on the same day last year. This is the biggest single-day increase in tax collection in BIR history. The increase indicates, in no uncertain terms, larger taxpayer turnout and greater voluntary compliance from the taxpaying public. BIR Commissioner Guillermo Parayno said their programs are reaping success as may be indicated by the increase in collections on April 15, the last day of income tax return (ITR) filing. He added that the many programs of the Bureau have been launched with the end in view, among others, of encouraging taxpayers to file and remit taxes on or before April 15. The Bureau has intensified its tax drive the past several months in a bid to boost collections and push forward the government’s fiscal program. Among the many measures which may have heightened the public’s tax awareness and contributed to the increase in April 15 collections include Executive Order 398 and R.R. 3-2005 requiring the submission of ITRs and business tax returns for all individuals who wish to enter into contracts with the government; the ITR and Financial Statement requirements for all borrowers and co-makers who wish to secure loans from banks; the e-Sales and Operation Dikit directing business taxpayers to enroll all their CRM/POS machines and report monthly gross sales for each machine; and the Run After Tax Evaders (RATE) Program which files tax-related cases every week against alleged big-time tax evaders. # PIA -Benguet * * * * * Public servants to receive mid-year benefits this May BAGUIO CITY (May 13) — Malacanang announced today that public workers can start receiving their mid-year bonuses equivalent to a half-month’s salary and half of the cash gift given at the end of the year. The release of the bonus is just in time for the enrollment and the opening of classes next month. In a related incident, Budget and Management Secretary Emilia Boncodin confirmed that government employees will be receiving one-half of their year-end bonus and cash gift starting yesterday until May 31, 2005. Boncodin said her office has already authorized the release of some P9.44 billion for the mid-year benefits of government workers. “We know that they are eagerly awaiting the release of their half-year bonus, especially with the school year about to start. These mid-year benefits will also be a big help in financing their children’s school expenses,” she added. Local government units, government financial institutions, and government-owned and/or controlled corporations are likewise given the go signal to pay the midyear benefits to their workers, chargeable against their respective local or corporate funds. All government workers are expected to receive the remaining half of their year-end benefits not earlier than November 15 but not later than November 30 of this year.# PIA * * * * * Abra’s new lawyers recognized BANGUED, Abra (May 12) —The province’s 20 new lawyers were honored with in a simple ceremony courtesy of the province’s law making body.
