Proposal to condemn Romy Sanchez slay up for approval |
||
BAGUIO CITY (May 12) — Two months after the brutal murder of Romeo Sanchez, Bayan Muna regional coordinator for the Ilocos region at Kayang Street, here last March 9, the city’s Committee on Human Rights, Justice, Public Protection and Safety, Peace and Order headed by Councilor Jose Mencio Molintas recommended the approval on the proposed resolution condemning the said killing. Councilor Leandro Yangot introduced the proposed resolution in March. Sanchez was gunned down by a lone assasin. A carthographic sketch of the killer was circulated a few days after the killing and a witness has surfaced identifying the assailant as Ares Binuya. As of presstime, however, Binuya remains at large. Molintas submitted his committee’s report on the Yangot resolution to the city council on May 10. In his proposed resolution which he submitted to the council on March 17, Yangot said that the killing of Sanchez was allegedly perpetrated due to his membership in the progressive partylist group Bayan Muna. He mentioned that brutal killings such as that of Sanchez should be condemned as this “constitutes barbarism and this would also bring the wrong signal among city residents and tourists about the security situation in the City of Baguio.” Aside from the condemnation, the proposed resolution also requests to exhaust all possible means for the immediate arrest of those responsible for the murder of Sanchez and to give justice to his bereaved family. On March 28, the committee endorsed the proposed resolution to Chief of Police Isagani R. Nerez. In a police report submitted to Nerez by Police Chief Inspector Joseph Ola-o Supa, Sr., the BCPO joined the city council and other sectoral groups in condemning such killings in the city. Supa said his office hoped that with the coming out of two witnesses, the Sanchez case would soon be solved and appealed for more witnesses to shed more light on the case. The motives of the killing was yet to be established as of March 31. The Ilocos Human Rights Alliance (IHRA) filed in April a case in behalf of the Sanchez kin before the Joint Monitoring Committee. The BCPO also filed criminal charges against Binuya. Copy of said cases were not yet obtained by NORDIS as of press time. Meanwhile, the Sanchez family continue to receive support from many sectors here and abroad. # Lyn V. Ramo for NORDIS |
