Cawed kinastigo ni Fariñas

BAGUIO CITY (Abril 28) — Inirekomenda ni Councilor Daniel Fariñas, chairman ng Committee on Market, Trade and Commerce na imbestigahan ang mga di umano’y ilegal na gawain ni City Park Management Office Supervisor Bong Cawed sa mga parke ng lungsod.

Ayon kay Fariñas, lumapit sa kanyang tanggapan ang mahigit 50 vendors sa Melvin Jones Grandstand upang isangguni ang kanilang suliranin.

Ayon sa mga vendor, malaking halaga ang kinolekta ni Cawed sa kanila para sa pagsasagawa ng Trade fair kasabay ng Cordillera Cultural Expo Festival 2005. Sa kabila ng pagbabayad umano nila ng renta sa paggamit sa Melvin Jones noong nakaraang linggo ay hindi pa sila pinapayagang mag-operate.

Bukod pa rito mariing sinabi ni Fariñas na hindi pinahintulutan ng Sangguniang Panlungsod ang nasabing aktibidad dahil hindi pa naisumite sa kanila ang naturang panukala. Hindi rin aniya pinahihintulutan si Cawed na mangolekta ng anumang bayarin para sa nasabing aktibidad.

Maliban rito, nahaharap din si Cawed sa isa pang imbestigasyo kaugnay ng kontrobersya sa pagtatayo ng mga stall sa Wright Park.

Mayor naglabas ng memo para sa treasurer’s office

BAGUIO CITY (Abril 22) — Naglabas ng isang memorandum si Mayor Braulio Yaranon na nag-aatas sa City Treasurer’s Offcie (CTO) na isumite ang breakdown ng mga nagastos ng lungsod sa Panagbenga mula noong 2001-2004 sa lalong madaling panahon.

Ang nasabing memorandum ay inilabas upang malaman umano kung may katotohanan ang alegasyon ni Nelia Cid na gumastos ang lokal na pamahalaan ng milyun-milyong piso maliban pa sa nakolekta mula sa mga advertiser.

Ayon sa alkalde, dapat lamang na malaman ng publiko ang tunay na halagang ginastos sa nasabing selebrasyon. Aniya walang ginastos ang lokal pamahalaan sa Panagbenga ngayong taon.

Run for Trails ’05 matagumpay na nailunsad

BAGUIO CITY (Abril 24) — Siyamnaput’t limang mga kalahok ang nakiisa sa 12-kilometer Run for Trails 2005 na pinangunahan ng University of the Philippines Baguio Mountaineers (UPBM) sa Camp John Hay noong Abril 24.

Ayon kay Roberto Acosta, tagapayo ng UPBM, ang nasabing aktibidad ay naglalayong magtaguyod ng maka-kalikasang kamalayan, at tumulong sa pagligtas at pag-mantine ng mga parke sa lungsod ng Baguio at maitaguyod ang mountaineering bilang isang alternatibong sport.

Ang Run for Trails ay nahati sa tatlong kategorya: ang individual-men, individual-women at ang grupo na binubuo ng tatlong kalahok.

Sa individual-men, nanguna si Modesto Madalang ng Brgy. Quirino Hill. Sinundan siya ni Roman Salbino at nasa ikatlong puwesto naman si Agustin Codli.

Para sa individual-women, ang 17 taong gulang na Criminology student ng University of Baguio na si Flordeliza Donoz ang nagkamit ng unang gantimpala samantalang sina Evelyn Oaing at Elizabeth Siogo ang nagkamit ng ikalawa at ikatlong karangalan.

Sa group category, namayagpag ang Ahkhong running group na sina Joel Bengtay, Larry Estoesta at Rosario Velasco-Alberto. Sinundan sila ng dalawang grupo mula sa Philippine Military Academy (PMA) na nakakuha ng ikalawa at ikatlong puwesto. Ang dalawang grupong ito ay binuo nina Noriel Chan, Sandra Lingbawan, Bernard Joaquin, Rodolfo Pulido, Eddie Asil at Gemma de Vera.

City Mayor orders quarantine to prevent FMD spread

BAGUIO CITY (April 26) — City Mayor Braulio Yaranon this week issued a memorandum enforcing a 30-day quarantine at the slaughter house compound, particularly the hog area, to prevent the reported widespread of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in the city.

This was after the FMD Bureau of Animal Industry and the City Veterinary Office confirmed that some animals in the slaughter house area were infected with the disease.

The Office of the City Veterinarian provided certain measures to control the virus. Slaughter house gates 1, 2 and 3 will be closed to the public. Gate 1 shall only be opened for buyers of goats, butchers and employees. All hogs shall be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

An All-In-All-Out policy except for those to be butchered during butchering time from 11pm to 8 a.m., and the inspection of gate pass and permits of all animals going inside the slaughter house compound upon entry at Balajadia Street would be implemented.

Mayor Yaranon said that the infected hogs were from Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan and La Union. He stressed that the quarantine was enforced to inform citizens on infected meat.

On the other hand, City Veterinarian IV Silarde Bisted said that there is no cause for alarm, since the disease does not affect the probable consumers.

“There is no adverse effect when one eats FMD-infected meat. It does not affect man, but it affects the swine industry. The Philippines will run out of hogs because these will perish. We will not be able to export”, he clarified.

Local media groups initiate clean-up drive

BAGUIO CITY (April 28) — In celebration of Broadcasters’ Month media practitioners conducted a clean-up drive at Baguio Central Business District last April 28, here. In line with this, the Baguio media agreed to promote cleanliness in the city after its economic downfall allegedly brought about by the meningococcemia scare.

In a forum held last April 27, Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP) Baguio-Benguet Chapter President Let-let dela Cruz emphasized that the campaign for cleanliness will help the city in its economic recovery.

The Baguio media reacted to the alleged mishandling of information by some of their colleagues that brought about the meningo scare. The activity strengthens also the media’s role in “promoting” the city’s tourism. Local businessmen allegedly blame the media in the city’s tourism decline.

Junjun Dumlao, chair of the local National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) said that although there might be some excesses in reporting the meningo phenomenon, the members of the media are also obliged to tell the people what they are entitled to know.

The clean-up drive was participated by 9 media organizations here. It was led by presidents of the Baguio Correspondents and Broadcasters Club Robert Tabay, Baguio Press Club Willy Cacdac, Baguio City PNP Press Club Thom Picana and PRO-CAR PNP Press Corp Ernie Olson, newsman Gerry Evangelista, NUJP’s Junjun Dumlao and City Public Information Officer Ramon Dacawi.

Baguio Newsmen started their “lakad pulot” from the Post Office at the top of Session Road picking up litter as they went down the sidewalks of Session Road to Magsaysay Avenue.
