Lang-ay 2005 opens in Mountain Province |

BAGUIO CITY (Mar. 22) — The provincial government of Mt. Province is all set to commemorate the province’s 39th Foundation Day through Lang-ay 2005, a cultural and wine festival which will depict the traditions of Mt. Province. Lang-ay is a Kankanaey term pertaining to sharing happiness, nurturing friendship, and fostering family relationships while partaking traditionally prepared food and wine. This year’s Lang-ay celebration is the first. Various activities will take place from April 1 to 7. (please refer to Community Billboard for details) The activity will serve as a reunion for Mt. Province folk who have settled in other parts of the country and the world. It also aims to nurture and strengthen family and community ties. Local products will also be featured in the weeklong celebration. Indigenous games, which are now a rarity, are scheduled on April 6. The games include chama (wrestling), Chepayo si Futog (Catching the Pig), and Khimata (weight lifting using the gimata). Other games include tug-of war and kadang-kadang. The celebration proper will take place on April 7. After the street dancing, Bontoc lalakays (elders) will perform the Alawig rites, followed by the Buago nan Co-ob by the elders of eastern and western Mt. Province. Congressman Victor Domiguez will deliver a for the celebration. Department of Land Reform Secretary Rene Villa is the guest speaker. Cultural presentations from the towns of Barlig, Bontoc, Natonin, Sadanga, Paracelis, Bauko, Besao, Sabangan, Sagada and Tadain will also take place on April 7.
