DFA, Jordanian embassy remiss on distressed OFW cases

BAGUIO CITY (Mar. 11) — Migrante-Cordillera expressed disappointment at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and Philippine embassy in Jordan for sending distressed overseas Filipino workers (OFW) back to their recruitment agencies.
Migrante-Cordillera Spokesperson Flora Belinan disclosed that two cases of distressed OFWs sought the embassy’s assistance but were sent back to their recruitment agencies.

Yolanda (not her real name) a native of Abra, is stranded in Jordan because she can not pay for her plane ticket back to the country.

Yolanda was terminated because she got sick. She went to the Jordanian embassy to seek refuge but was sent back instead to the ABC Abdon power supply, her recruitment agency. Since she does not have money to pay for her fare back home, the agency wrote her husband to pay for her fare. The agency is demanding Yolanda’s husband to pay US$ 2,000.

Alice’s (not her real name) experience with the embassy is very similar. She was also sent back to her recruitment agency, Ana’s Establishment Agency. Her family sent P50, 000 for her fare. She arrived here last February.

Alice was terminated when she complained about her missing money. According to her accounts, her salary disappeared while she was sleeping on the very same day that her employer gave it.

Belinan reiterated that the DFA has funds for the repatriation of OFWs. She added that OFW families depend on remittances, which only means that it is additional burden for the family to pay for the repatriation. “May pondo ang DFA kaya hindi dapat ang pamilya ang mamroblema sa pamasahe ng OFW,” she stressed. # Kim Quitasol for NORDIS
