Kalinga youth observe KYW

TABUK, Kalinga (Mar. 10) — Kalinga youth and students commemorated Kaigorotan Youth Week with the theme “Protect national patrimony and rights on ancestral lands, resist industrial liberalization, mining and commercialization of culture” last March 5 at the IAT Compound in Bulanao here.

The event was initiated by the Samahan ng mga Mag-aaral ng Kalinga (SAMAKA)-Anakbayan and was attended by 70 youth from different sectors.

The program consisted of a series of lectures on the background of the celebration and on the mining, land grabbing and industrial liberalization situations in Cordillera.

The program also included an update on the latest student rights violations in Kalinga-Apayao State College (KASC). The emphasis of the update was on the resistance of Dr. Manuel Bilagot, dean of the Department of Engineering, to approve the certificate of Good Moral Character of Gerlie Tolentino. The said certificate is a requirement for the application for the candidacy for the incoming Student Supreme Council Election. Bilagot, allegedly, did not provide a reason for not issuing the certificate. Tolentino was not able to apply for the candidacy for this reason.

The celebration was ended by a series of cultural presentations from the participants. # Liberty Balnao for NORDIS
