BAGUIO CITY (Feb. 11) — Relatives and friends of Alex Sumeg-ang and Dalmacio Palandito, both from Mt. Province who were last seen on January 10, 2005 are becoming helpless having no clue of their whereabouts for a month already. Sumeg-ang, 29, hails from Talubin, Bontoc, is based at the Slaughter Compound here in the City. Palandito, in his mid-30’s, comes from Banao, Bauko, and resides in San Carlos Heights here. According to witnesses, at around 4:30 p.m. of the said date, January 10, 2005, Sumeg-ang and Palandito were seen walking along the overpass at Harrison Road. There, a certain PO2 Jerry Tayaben who was in civilian clothes and assigned at Baguio City Police Office’s (BCPO) Substation 7, together with an unidentified companion approached the two and dragged them into a taxi. Witnesses failed to memorize the taxi’s plate number. Immediate relatives of the two tried to locate them in the city jail and other police precints but to no avail. They also tried to approach Tayaben but were told that he has not reported for days. They even went to the extent of searching along the roads leading to Ampucao, Kennon and Marcos Highways on the suspicion that the two were “salvaged” or summarily executed. These roads are known for being “dumping sites of “salvage” victims. The families filed a petition of Writ of Habeas Corpus to demand the appearance of the two. They also filed criminal charges against Tayaben and his unidentified companion. It was then that Tayaben appeared and attended the three hearings on February 3, 8 and 10 respectively. In his testimony, Tayaben did not deny meeting the two. He said that the two voluntarily rode with him. He was allegedly on his way to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) building and the two were headed to nearby National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) office, so he offered them a ride. He also said that he even gave the Sumeg-ang and Palandito P50 for taxi fare going home. A relative of Sumeg-ang who asked not to be identified said that the two were never convicted and has no criminal records for them to be arrested. # Aldwin Quitasol for NORDIS |
