10th Panagbenga pushes through in meningo-safe Baguio |
||
BAGUIO CITY (Jan 27) — Health authorities have advised local government and other concerned agencies that the city is now safe from meningococcal diseases. With this development, the tenth staging of the Baguio Flower Festival is definitely pushing through. This was the statement of Tourism Regional Director Purificacion Molintas in a Kapihan held at the CAP Cultural Center at the Club John Hay. This year’s Panagbenga will open with the silent drill of the Philippine Military Academy on February 12, the Alumni homecoming of the country’s prime military school at Fort del Pilar. Several cultural and flower-related activities, including a special children’s festival are expected to draw in more tourists into the city which authorities hope will bring some P5 million in revenues for the city, or 70% of the festival proceeds this year. Simplicity, frugality ethnicity will be featured in this year’s Panagbenga. Authorities say that it will be a simple affair. The Baguio Flower Festival, according to Mayor Braulio D. Yaranon, belongs to the Filipino people. It will bring out the best in Baguio City for tourists and residents alike, he added. Home-grown artist Eric de Guia or Kidlat Tahimik will provide major design concepts for the festival. Organizers promise a more cultural and less commercialized staging of the BFF this year. Although a P10,000 entry fee for the float parade is expected from each company, the guidelines are clear that the floats should be 80-90% flowers and should carry only one logo of the advertisers on each float. Yaranon earlier signed an advisory that Baguio city is as safe as the rest of the Philippines, referring to the lifting of the meningococcemia alert by the Department of Health on Monday, January 24. Molintas also cited an international endorsement as she showed a note personally written on the stationery of Dr. Eric Bertherat, the World Health Organization (WHO) representative from Geneva, Switzerland. Bertherat said that Baguio City is “definitely one of the nicest destinations in the Philippines”. He was in town to monitor the meningococcemia outbreak in Baguio City. # Lyn V. Ramo for NORDIS |
