Migratory birds, ipinagbawal hulihin

BAGUIO CITY (Enero 12) — Nagbabala ang Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-CAR) laban sa panghuhuli at pagkain ng mga migratory birds upang maiwasang kumalat ang bird flu.

Sinabi ni Tever Dionisio, hepe ng Protected Areas and Wildlife Management Service na di hinihikayat ng departamento ang panghuhuli ng mga dayong ibon dahil sa posibleng taglay nilang flu virus na nakakaapekto sa iba pang mga ibon at manok.

Ayon kay Dionisio, kapag kinain ang mga ito ay maari ring maging dahilan ng human flu.

Inaasahan ang pagdating ng mga migratory birds mula sa bansang China at Japan dahil iniiwasan ng mga ito ang winter season hanggang Pebrero. # Robert Tabay/DzEQ

Cordillera Parents Summit idaraos sa Pebrero

BAGUIO CITY (Enero 12) — Isang Cordillera Parents Summit na pangungunahan ng Department of Education Cordillera Region ang nakatakdang idaos sa Pebrero.

Ayon kay Remedios Taguba, Regional Director ng DepED, layunin ng Summit na maglinaw hinggil sa kasalukuyang tinatakbo ng pag-aaral ng mga kabataan at upang mapag-usapan ang mga paraan upang itaas ang antas ng interes ng mga mag-aaral sa mga paksang itinuturo sa kanila.

Ang Summit ay bukas sa lahat ng magulang ng mga mag-aaral mula sa pampubliko at pribadong paaralan. Umaasa ang DepED-CAR na aabot sa dalawang libong magulang ang dadalo sa aktibidad na ito. Ang registration fee ay tinatayang aabot sa P800 bawat delegado. # Jhong Munar/DzEQ

Kontrobersyal na lupain ng pamilyang Paus sa Dontogan Barangay, binili ng Mailed Molina

BAGUIO CITY (Enero 8) — Pinabulaanan ni Bucloc, Abra Mayor Mailed Molina na siya ay kasalukuyang nag-i-squat sa bahagi ng Dairy Farm na matatagpuan sa Dontogan Barangay sa Lungsod ng Baguio.

Ayon kay Molina, nabili niya sa pamilyang Paus ang lupaing pinagpatayuan niya ng bahay.

Mayroong ipinakitang titulo ang pamilyang Paus kung kayat nakumbinsinsi siyang bilhin ang bahagi ng kanilang “lot claim,” paliwanag ni Molina.

Ang lupaing inaangkin ng pamilyang Paus ay naging kontrobersyal dahil ito ay bahagi ng government reservation na pinangangasiwaan ng Department of Agriculture. # Robert Tabay/DzEQ

Cordillera hospitals get $3,500 from Northern California BIBAK

BAGUIO CITY (Dec. 26) — Six provincial hospitals in the Cordillera received a total of $3,500 in cash support from expatriates who have settled in northern California, USA. The donation was hand carried by outgoing Northern California BIBAK President

Johnny Copero, who came with his family for a vacation.

The BIBAK chapter, one of the biggest chapters overseas with 300 members from Sacramento down to Fresno, earlier extended relief to fire victims in Mankayan two years ago. It also helped bail out a Benguet native who was in jail in Saudi Arabia. It also supports churches in the Cordillera.

Foreign support for family planning phases out in 2008

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 2) — Foreign support to the country’s family planning program is targeted to be completed by 2008. Eventual take-over of local government units is expected to come with the gradual phase-out of foreign aid.

Department of Health (DOH) Regional Director Teresita Bonoan said that while external donors have been supporting the program for more than 30 years, the aid was never intended to go on infinitely.

Complete phase out of all donated supplies of condoms, pills and injectable contraceptives will end in 2008, according to Bonoan;s letter to Mayor Braulio Yaranon. Only intrauterine device (IUD) will not be phased out.

In a related development, the DOH has formulated a Contraceptive Self-reliance (CSR) strategy for a smooth transition that will enable local government units and other stakeholders to continue the program with domestically provided contraceptives.
