Yaranon stops tree cutting at BGH Rotonda

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 12) — Mayor Braulio D. Yaranon stopped the cutting of trees at the proposed BGH Flyover. He ordered the city engineer to advice the builder of the said overpass not to cut any tree.

Yaranon noted that the flyover project will also necessarily encroach into the Bued watershed and the hospital reservation.

As the ground preparations are underway, the mayor fears that some century-old agoho trees may be felled that he called the attention of the City Engineer to advice the builders not to cut these centennial trees.

“These trees are now part of our historical heritage,” Yaranon said. He said he personally inspected the site of the flyover and it turned out that six 75-100 year-old trees are going to be cut according to the project.

Yaranon also told the Baguio mass media that the building of the flyover at the BGH Rotonda is illegal citing that there is no certification of fund availability and that there would be a possible technical malversation should the project push through.

The mayor said that as provided for by the 1987 Revised Administrative Code, a project proponent should secure funding for any project. He disclosed that the builders could not present any certification that funds are available for the construction of the project.

He said that the building of a flyover at the BGH Rotonda will encroach into three other roads, Kennon, Gov. Pack and Kisad, which are clearly not part of Marcos Highway. Yaranon said that if the flyover project extends up to the Rotonda there would be technical malversation.

He said he has opposed the project from the start. # Lyn V. Ramo for NORDIS
