BCU nursing, midwifery students protest affiliation fee hike

BAGUIO CITY – The third year nursing students of Baguio Central University staged a 15-minute silent protest in front of the school gate at BCU Magsaysay. Around 60 students joined the said mass action led by the Samahan ng Mag-aaral ng Nursing at Midwifery (SMNM) to condemn the P3,936 increase in their affiliation fee in Manila.

In an interview, SMNM Governor Chester Mark Tuazon said that many students could not afford the huge amount allotted for only 24 days. He pointed out that the said increase will only be an additional burden especially to the parents.

The Dean of the College of Nursing, together with the faculty members held an “Open Forum” on Dec. 22, 2005. Some “concerned students” participated. According to Tuazon, it was merely information dissemination and not an open forum.

“Hindi nai-discuss kung payag ang mga estudyante sa napakataas na amount na babayaran,” he said. The amount for lodging, food and transportation last year amounted to P555.50 per day. With the new increase it amounts to P719.50 per day. The exact difference is P164 per day or an overall total of P3,936 for the whole 24 days.

Tuazon argued that the Dec. 22 “Open Forum” was unsuccessful. The Student Government was not informed of the said gathering.

“Hindi na-inform ang mga estudyante dahil itinaon sa Christmas vacation. Kahit ako ay hindi nasabihan dahil wala na akong duty noon at nakabakasyon na.”

The SMNM together with the Democratic Action Party for the Youth (DAP-AY) held another round of consultation with the Dean and concerned faculty members on Jan. 13, 2005. More than 750 nursing students voiced their disgust over the excessive affiliation fee.

“Wala daw silang magagawa dahil natapos nang makipagkontrata sa Hotel. Hindi naman kami ang naki-kontrata bakit kami ang magbabayad?” he pointed out. Tuazon added that they already gathered more than 700 signatures to junk the said increase. The effort was initiated by SMNM and DAP-AY.

NORDIS tried to interview Dean Jeannette Bongalos but unfortunately she was not in her office before the close of press time. # Joel A. Capulong, Johnny Fialen, Marlon Gomarcho for NORDIS
