Delayed projects give Urdaneta folk worse new year

URDANETA CITY, PANGASINAN (Jan 10) – ‘What’s taking them so long?’ asked local entrepreneurs who celebrated a ‘not-so-merry-Christmas’ due to diminished profit.

The complaint was attributed to two pending development projects here, the road widening along Mc Arthur and a new public market.

Lack of funding is the main reason behind, said Councilor Leopoldo del Prado. Del Prado was among the officials who proposed a by-pass road instead of widening when the matter was deliberated in 2002.

“The public’s money being used for the widening would go to waste since a diversion road is up in 2007 bridging Sison, Binalonan, Asingan and Urdaneta,” he said.

The project is seen to ease traffic problems, according to City Mayor Amadeo Perez. JB Sison, however, an owner of a gasoline station situated along the area said the widening wouldn’t solve the traffic problem in the city.

Lower ranking entrepreneurs are more severely affected, del Prado added.

Josie Manuel, 34, a sidewalk vendor relates her livelihood yielded the worst this year forcing her daughter out of school. Lower profit was also experienced by Almario Sanchez, 55, a barber shop owner.

Meanwhile, “collapsing” was how fish and vegetable vendors depicted the city’s public market. Large portion of the market was razed to the ground in May last year. The incident was instigated to give way to the road widening, suspecting vendors said.

Perez said the market construction would resume in January and would indefinitely end in 2005.

Marife Bantilo, 29, a long-time vendor said her profit decreased by over 50% this year since the dislocation due mainly to absence of road parking and deteriorating market structure. Similar complaint was expressed by Emma Salazar, 55, fish vendor. She said fewer gains and more unsold fish were the results of the pending construction.

However, they look forward to a better workplace must the new 3-storey market be finished next year. # Jhong dela Cruz for NORDIS
