BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 14) — Close to a thousand residents of Tabuk municipality in Kalinga province gathered for a peace rally on January 9 at the municipal hall and condemned the recent killing of a businessman. Speakers from different sectors and groups urged concerned government agencies for an immediate delivery of justice on the killing of businessman Manuel Dulawon, 73. The Kalinga Religious Sector Associations initiated the rally with the theme: “Come let us rise up together against violence.” Rally participants claimed that the number of killings has been growing in Tabuk. This include the November murder of journalist Stephen Bas-ong Omaois and the December killing of Andrina Ba-a . These killings are still unresolved due to absence of witnesses and evidence. After the peace rally at 1 pm, the participants conducted a motorcade starting from barangay Dagupan where the public viewed Dulawon’s remains. The motorcade of more than 70 vehicles went around the municipality with the motorists bearing placards and streamers with calls for peace and resolution of the killings in Tabuk. It can be recalled that in the morning of January 7, two unidentified armed men approached Dulawon in his farm in Calagdao, Bulanao, Tabuk asking if carabaos had entered his farm but the victim answered negatively. After a few minutes, one of the men shot Dulawon on the neck that pierced through the other side. He was later brought to the Kalinga Provincial hospital after his son-in-law called for help but was pronounced dead-on-arrival (DOA) by attending doctors. Dulawon, who was also former official of the Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS) and Director of the Tabuk Multi-purpose Cooperative (TAMPCO), was buried on Monday, January 10, at the Bulanao cemetery in Tabuk. The Kalinga PNP are still seeking leads that will identify Dulawon’s killers. # Arthur L. Allad-iw for NORDIS with reports from Kalinga |
