Philex local elections reset on Jan. 10, 2005 |
||
TUBA, Benguet (Jan. 7) — The Philex Mining Corporation’s Local Elections (LE) was moved to January 10 from its original date, January 8, 2005 to ensure a bigger voter turnout. The original schedule falls on a pay day of mine workers for the first working week of January. Candidates for the LE were relieved with the change because it will give them more time to campaign. In an Election Conference last December 29, 2003, candidates and election officials agreed that the distribution of flyers and holding of campaign rallies are not allowed. The forms of campaign were limited to person to person and room to room. Outsiders were also barred to endorse and campaign for LE candidates. Such violations will subject candidates to technical disqualification. But the candidates’ children and relatives who reside in the Philex camps may help in the campaign. Meanwhile, the candidates are still waiting for the result of the screening to determine if they are qualified to run for the LE. The decision will be released by the national office of the National Mines and Allied Services Workers Union or NAMAWU. The said elections will give mine workers a chance to choose union officers for the NAMAWU. # Aldwin Quitasol for NORDIS |
