Kalinga farmer-businessman shot dead by unidentified men

BAGUIO CITY (January 8) – A farmer-businessman was shot to death by alleged two armed men yesterday, January 7, in his farm in Bulanao, Tabuk, Kalinga.

The victim was identified as Mr. Manuel Dulawon, more than 60 years of age, who was declared dead-on-arrival (DOA) at the Kalinga Provincial hospital.

A reliable source interviewed by NORDIS claimed that at around 9 am yesterday, Dulawon drove his pick-up truck from their home in Dagupan, Tabuk to fetch his companion in Bulanao. They proceeded to his farm located in Calagdao, Bulanao near the Kalinga Hostel.

The NORDIS source added that at least 50 to 100 meters to the gate of his farm, two men approached Dulawon and asked if there were carabaos that went inside his farm.

Dulawon replied negative after which they had a casual conversation. One of the armed men then challenged Dulawon into a draw but the latter begged off.

The duo bade goodbye but one of them went back and fired a single shot that hit Dulawon’s neck and pierced through the other side. The men casually walked away from the crime scene.

Back to his senses, Dulawon’s companion got the cell phone inside the pick-up and called for help. Dulawon was rushed to the Kalinga Provincial Hospital but was pronounced dead.

Cattle rustlers are suspect

Another reliable source believes that the culprits are cattle rustlers in the area. Local police are still conducting an investigation on the case, another source reported.

Dulawon will be laid to rest tomorrow in one of Tabuk’s cemeteries.

Dulawon was a former official of the Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS) and a former politician in Kalinga province. He was a director of the Tabuk Multi-purpose Cooperative (TAMPCo), a well-known cooperative dealing in rice in the region.

Meanwhile, multi-sectoral groups in Tabuk are planning to conduct a condemnation rally against the killing of Dulawon on Monday, January 9. It can be recalled that journalist Stephen Omaois was killed last November 26 and another old woman killed in December last year. # Arthur L. Allad-iw for NORDIS
