Mine workers all set for 2005 local elections

TUBA, Benguet (Dec. 28) — As the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for the years 1999-2004 between the Philex Mining Corporation (PMC) and National Mine and Allied Services Workers Union or NAMAWU Local 101 on December 31, 2004, underground and surface workers are preparing for the upcoming Local Elections (LE) of their new set of union officials on January 8, 2005.

The next batch of union officers will be composed of five members of the Executive Board (EB), which will consist of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and Auditor. The workers will also choose a 7-member Board of Directors (BOD).

Kilusang Mayo Uno-Cordillera (KMU-Cordillera) Spokesperson James Tulipa said that the workers will be given a chance to select their leaders in the LE, where they will be given the chance to individually scrutinize the candidates.

Tulipa expressed hope that the mineworkers will be able to select leaders who will truly fight for their rights and welfare.

The PMC has more than 1, 700 rank-and-file underground and surface workers, where most of them are NAMAWU Local 101 members. # Aldwin Quitasol for NORDIS
