Benguet sanitary landfill up for completion |

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (Dec.7) — Due to increasing population and garbage collection in this town, municipal officials here are fast tracking the installation of the sanitary landfill which is the first in Luzon. The present population of La Trinidad is about 80,000 persons and this due to rapid migration of people coming from different places in the country which affect also the volume of garbage every day. According to Mayor Nestor Fongwan, the proposed sanitary landfill is located at Induyan, Alno, with a land area of 10 hectares. The mayor said the site is favorable since it is far from the residential areas. This project has three major components, the control dam, waste segregation and the composting plant. Fongwan said the total amount needed for the project is P40 million. Government and non-government organizations are also assisting in the project completion, he said. The provincial board of Benguet has appropriated a P5million assistance while Jaime V. Ongpin Foundation (JVOF) allotted P17 million. Next year, the municipality of La Trinidad will also apppriate P15 million for the project. “We are trying to finsh the project as soon as possible because our open dump site is only good for 3 years, approximately the sanitary landfill will be operational in the first quater of 2005”. Fongwan likewise revealed that the waste management project will be beneficial to farmers since biodegradable materials will be transformed into organic fertilizers.
