Bonsai exhibit amuses crowd

DAGUPAN CITY, Pangasinan (Dec. 8)—A Bantigue bonsai has won the top plum, Best in Show, at the 5th Bonsai Open Exhibition held in CSI Mall, Lucao District.

Owned by Joel Embuscado a bonsai hobbyist from Jaen, Nueva Ecija the entry bested 47 other bonsai trees on exhibit from December 7 to 11.

Nine other winning entries were also included among the top ten.

Pangasinan Bonsai Society said the event which gathered 48 participants from La Union, Tarlac, Pampanga and Pangasinan highlighted a ‘popular demand for bonsai either for prestige or enterprise’.

Established in 1999, the group has over 60 bonsai hobbyists around the province. Orlando Soriano, a member of its Board of Directors said, “the hobby could be cultivated anytime, anywhere since the specie ranges to varied types and grows anywhere”.

On display are varied types of bonsai such as Bantigue, Balite, Mulawin, Lagundi, Philippine tea and fruit-bearing such as guava, tamarind and camachile. Bonsai trees amount to P500 at the lowest price to a whooping P500,000 for expensive types. The winning entry, a Bantigue is pegged at P350,000.

Michael Morden, PBS President won 2nd place at the National Bonsai Open Competition in April this year with also a Bantigue bonsai. # Jong de la Cruz for NORDIS
