LAGAWE, Ifugao (Dece. 8)—The Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) in Lagawe listed four people dead and some eight people were injured in Banaue and Lamut.towns due to typhoon Yoyong here.

Casualties include Ruth Duguyen, 10 years old, her sister Semei Joy Duguyen, 12, Alfonso Benito and Fe Baliwang.

On the evening of December 2, the Duyugen sisters, together with their father, were inside their house in Brgy. Viewpoint, Banaue when landslides, heavy rainfall and strong winds buried them alive. The father survived the tragedy.

Alfonso Benito, a resident of Cudog, Lagawe was hit by a falling tree which caused his immediate death. Victim Fe Baliwang from the municipality of Mayoyao is a fourth year accountancy student at the St Mary’s University in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya. She died minutes after her boarding house in Bayombong collapsed.

Partial reports collated by the PDCC showed there were some 812 families or 3,450 people who were affected and whose houses were destroyed. Twenty one families in Alfonso Lista were moved to evacuation centers. Thirty-two families in Kiangan, 64 families in Hingyon, and 158 families in Lagawe were affected by the typhoon.

The PDCC had difficulty getting updates from the communities because the communication and transportation networks were destroyed. Electicity has been cut as electric posts collapsed and wires were lying low to the grounds. Banaue, Tinoc, Hungduan, Hingyon remain unserved with electricity. Cell sites were also put off

The Provincial Social Welfare and Development (PSWD) distributed some 31 cavans of rice and 18 boxes of sardines to the affected families. Every affected family shall receive 5 kilos of rice and five pieces of canned sardines. Additional rice supply will soon be released following the passage yesterday of a Sangguniang Panlalawigan resolution declaring the province under a state of calamity.

Ifugao Provincial Governor Benjamin B. Cappleman this week extended cash assistance amounting to P21,000 to the bereaved families of super typhoon Yoyong here.

Under a state of calamity, local government units are allowed to use five percent (5%) of their internal revenue allotment (IRA) for relief and rehabilitation. # Jenny Nanglihan via NORDIS
