Chadyaas kin offered with P160t settlement

Suspect in Sadanga hunter’s slay still at large

BAGUIO CITY (Dec. 10) — A year after his death, the suspect in the slay of hunter Etfew Chadyaas in Sadanga, Mt. Province remains at large as military officials in Mt. Province claim not to know Lt. Edward Sia-ed’s whereabouts.

Chadyaas was killed on August 5 last year while tending his swidden area. The victim’s family and village mates decried pronouncements from Army officials that the incident was a “legitimate operation” and that “Chadyaas was a member of the New People’s Army (NPA).

Sia-ed led the Bravo and Charlie platoons of the 54th IB when Chadyaas was gunned down.

In an interview with Cordillera Human Rights Alliance (CHRA) Secretary General Atty. Randy Kinaud on the organization’s second assembly here, expressed dismay over the authorities’ inaction despite a warrant of arrest issued for Sia-ed. Provincial Prosecutor Moises Ayochok issued the said warrant last January.

Kinaud said that it is impossible for authorities not to know Sia-ed’s whereabouts.

A series of dialogues took place between the victim and the perpetrator’s families this year. Sia-ed’s family reportedly offered a settlement amount of P160,000 as of this week, sources say.

“However, no amount of settlement will be tantamount to the Chadyaas family’s condition that Sia-ed should be arrested,” he said.

Early this year, Etfew’s Belwang village and his kin agreed to enter into a settlement once Sia-ed is arrested.

Army representatives were not present during the last few dialogues except this week when Sia-ed’s parents allegedly offered the P160,000 settlement.

The victim’s family and the Belwang community only said that they will deliberate on the proposal still on the basis that Sia-ed be arrested first. # ATB for NORDIS
