Turismo sa Baguio, apektado ng ‘meningococcemia’ BAGUIO CITY (Nov. 24) — Nangamba ang Baguio Tourism Council (BTC) na papalpak ang nakatakdang Metro Manila Film Festival sa lungsod dahil sa napabalitang meningococcemia outbreak. Ayon kay BTC Chair Nicolas Tabora, malaki ang epekto ng napabalitang outbreak di lamang sa mga tourist arrival kundi pati mga nakatakdang kaganapan sa Film Fest. Samantala, malaki aniya ang posibilidad na aprubahan ng konseho ang petisyon ng mga organizers ng Film Fest para makakuha ito ng tax exemption. Inaasahang makakuha umano ito ng partial o full exemption mula sa nakatakdang 30% amusement tax na mapupunta sana sa syudad. # Rowena Caccam/DzEQ * * * * * DA sec, di dumalo sa Benguet farmers forum BAGUIO CITY (Nov. 23) — Lubos ang pagkadismaya ng mga magsasaka ng Benguet sa hindi pagdalo ni Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Luis Lorenzo sa farmers forum na ginanap nitong linggo dito sa lalawigan. Nakuntento na lamang ang mga ito sa presentasyon ng Bureau of Post Harvest Research and Extension (BPHRE) kaugnay sa post harvest handling and packaging at ng cold chain technology. Nagkaroon din ng presentasyon ang Bureau of Agriculture and Fishery Products standard at ang provincial veterinary. Idinagdag din nila na dahil hindi nakarating si Lorenzo, hindi nila naiparating sa pamahalaan ang kanilang mga kahilingan. # Joseph Cabanas/DzEQ * * * * * Bananas dominate fruits planted in CAR BAGUIO CITY (Nov. 23) — Banana is the fruit of choice planted by most farmers in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). In terms of area planted, Ifugao has the highest land area planted with bananas at around 1,200 hectares or 30% of the regional total. Abra with 26% ranks second, followed by Apayao (14%), Mt. Province (13%), Benguet (9%), and Kalinga (8%). Dr. Elizabeth Verzola, Regional Technical Director of the DA-RFU-CAR, said that Baguio and La Trinidad are the only strawberry producers in the country. Lychee, longan, persimmon, blueberry, and tamarillo area among the emerging potential fruit crops in the Cordillera. Fruit production generally is of second priority to the production of staple foods, cash and annual crops, according to her. # Robert Domoguen * * * * * North, central Luzon, source of world’s sweetest mangoes BAGUIO CITY (Nov. 24) — The Philippines is the 5th major mango producer of the world and most of the production comes from northern and central Luzon (NCL). A market assessment survey of the mango industry in the Philippines conducted by the Department of Agriculture (DA) show that the biggest source of mango exporting comes from CAR, Regions I, II, and III. The study, which was conducted in the major mango provinces of Abra, Benguet, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac and Zambales also reveal that the best mango quality comes from the said areas. Data analyzed by the study revealed that 59% of the national total mango produce come from the NCL. Mangoes produced in these regions produce 70% of the nation’s export mangoes, and supplies 80% of the requirements of processing plants in Luzon and Cebu. # Robert Domoguen * * * * * Greater focus on math, science, English needed - DepEd BAGUIO CITY (Nov. 28) — Department of Education (DepEd) Assistant Secretary Theodore Catindig said this week that greater emphasis on English, Math, and Science will be undertaken by the department after results in a recent survey showed low percentage performances in academics of elementary and high school students. Catindig said that in a test conducted last March for highschool students, only 2% scored 75% or over. He added that a survey showed that 99.5% of grade VI pupils are not ready for high school, but most, if not all, are accepted for secondary education. He also noted that only about 19% of teachers are proficient He said that the shift in tack will mean less extra curricular activities and a renewed push for greater involvement of support institutions such as parents, teachers and community associations to improve the quality of schools in the country. # Ramon Dacawi * * * * * School board approves P2.9 M for add’l classrooms BAGUIO CITY (Nov. 28) — The city board headed by Mayor Braulio Yaranon approved this week the implementation of five school building projects totally costing P2,889,800. About P1.5 million will be for the completion of two-floor, two-classroom facilities each for the Doña Aurora annex of the Baguio City National High School or BCNHS (P449,300), Pinsao annex of Pines City High (P700,000) and the Irisan High (P800,000). The remainder will be for the completion of another building for the San Vicente annex of BCNHS (P617,000) and construction of a perimeter fence and building repair at the city school division office. Dominador Roxas Jr. who represents the city federation of parents, teachers, and community associations in the board earlier recommended the projects after inspecting the sites. # Ramon Dacawi * * * * * Benguet SP takes on anti-gambling measures LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (Nov. 26) — Provincial officials here are now studying a proposed resolution directing the Provincial Police Office to confiscate all kinds of electronic gambling machines being operated in the province. Various reports have been received from concerned citizens most specially parents that video carrera, video poker machines, slot machines and other kinds of electronic gambling machines are being operated secretly by some establishments in the province. Board Member William Esteban said that gambling “will erode the morality of the people particularly the children who patronize said gambling machines”. Addiction to such will only lead to bankruptcy, unnecessary loans which will burden any family, debt, theft, child and spousal abuse, neglect of family responsibilities, and depression, he said. # Mari W. Cruz/PIA * * * * * 2004 Reg’l literacy awardees named BAGUIO CITY (Nov. 24) —The city played host to this year’s Regional Literacy Awarding Ceremony held this week at the Baguio City Hall Multi-purpose Hall. This year’s Most Outstanding Basic Literacy Mobile Teacher is Celia Pelotin of Luna, Apayao. She is also 2nd runner up at the national level search. Pelotin was also conferred the 2004 Lingkod Bayan Award by the Civil Service Commission last September. Luna Mayor Betty Verzola, who was present during the Literacy Awarding Ceremony, helped Pelotin receive her award . Placing 3rd runner-up in the same category is Leticia Sao-an of Mt. Province. Elda Batoc of Kiangan, Ifugao, placed 2nd runner-up, while Eleonor Cid of Tublay, Benguet placed 1st runner-up. Victoria Tamulong of the Igorota Foundation was awarded as Most Outstanding Literacy Worker, while Gemma Banglag, a Literacy Facilitator from Tabuk, Kalinga was 1st runner-up. Timpuyog Dagiti Inna, an organization headed by Vice Mayor Socorro Guzman of Dolores, Abra as its Program Manager, was conferred the Most Outstanding Literacy Program Award. The International Association for Transformation (Peace for Indigenous People) was 1st runner up. The award was received by Sison Paut, President and Project Manager for Kalinga and Region II. Mayor Concepcion Balao of Atok, Benguet, was also present to receive their award as Most Outstanding Local Government Unit in the 4th -6th class category. Coming in as 1st runner up was Dolores, Abra. Dolores Mayor Albert Guzman received the award on behalf of his municipality. The Most Outstanding Local Government Award 1st-3rd class category was conferred to La, Trinidad, Benguet, which was received by Mayor Nestor Fongwan. La Trinidad was also 1st runner-up at the national level. Receiving the plaque as Most Outstanding City Government Unit was Baguio City Mayor Braulio Yaranon. The Outstanding Non-Formal Education (NFE) Supervisor for the year 2003
was also given out during the said ceremony to Erlinda San Jose, Officer-in-Charge
of the Assistant Schools Division Superintendent’s Office of Mt.
Province. The Outstanding NFE Coordinator 2003 Award was given to the
