Wendy’s -- SM Baguio employees unpaid for months

BAGUIO CITY (Nov. 25) — Unlike its tagline in commercials, Wendy’s in SM Baguio is definitely not “the place to be” as some employees complained of not receiving a single centavo since they started work.

Wendy’s SM Baguio, a local branch of the famous national fast-food chain employs 20 persons, mostly graduates of a four-year course, of which only six are regular workers. The rest are part-time or contractual, who work four hours a day with and are paid P25.63 per hour, working on a shift basis. The store implements three shifts in a day and let their workers report on rotation.

KMU-Cordillera spokesperson James Tulipa expressed sympathy to the employees and criticized the company for not paying their workers. He cited that the workers did not receive their wages for three to six months. He also said that the management is wise in paying its employees through an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) so that it doesn’t need to provide payslips.

Tulipa added that Wendy’s Baguio management fooled their workers when it paid an employee only P3,000 for the three months he rendered. The worker was not even issued pay slip. When he asked for one, the management promised to give it “later”.

Tulipa stated that the likes of Wendy’s and other fast-food chains are notorious for their contractual-employment scheme. They hire employees for six months or less so that they will not be obliged to regularize their employees.

Tulipa urges fast-foods employees who were not paid to file cases against their employers.

“There were many fast-food employees who are not being paid fairly even when they already finished their contracts, they should file a complaint to demand their employers to pay them”, he said. # Aldwin Quitasol for NORDIS
