Luisita workers still on strike

BAGUIO CITY (Nov. 26) — After the inhuman killings of the farm workers in Hacienda Luisita, Tarlac last November 16, workers of United Luisita Workers Union (ULWU) and Central Azucarera de Tarlac Labor Union (CATLU) remain in their ranks.

In a phone interview with ULWU President Rene Galang, he said that they were supposed to negotiate with the management on November 25 yet the management panel failed to appear on the said date. The negotiation was reset the following day but only the lawyers of the management appeared.

Another schedule was set for December 2 in San Fernando, Pampanga. Such moves are but delaying tactics of the management, said Ricardo Ramos, CATLU president. The CATLU also set a schedule with the Central Azucarera de Tarlac management on that day.

A certain Mr. Alcantara, an appointee of the management after the illegal retrenchment of the union officers, represented himself as a member of the union’s negotiating panel. Galang said that if this man continues to represent himself as the union president, the negotiations would be interrupted.

Galang said that supporters for the striking workers continue to grow by the thousands, with support coming from various regions in Luzon.

“We are in the midst of a justifiable struggle, and we will continue this fight until victory is in our hands. And we will seek justice for our comrades who have been killed by the fascist government’s troops”, Galang said. # JAC for NORDIS
