New tax scheme imperils Pangasinan business

URDANETA CITY, Pangasinan (Nov. 24) —Revising the local revenue code might endanger the business sector here as added tax impositions will be implemented.

In the second quarter of the year, the city has suffered from ‘gawat’ or financial crisis as resulted by a crisis experienced on a nationwide scale, the local government unit said. The crisis caused the retrenchment of about 20 to 30 workers among the ranks of the local government in July.

A revision of the ‘decade-old’ revenue code might solve the recurrent problem in budget, said City Mayor Amadeo Perez. He said, “there is a need to update the code since it undergone revision a decade ago”.

Transparency in the declaration of gross sales in a year is not reflected through renewal of business permits, he added. Losses incurred in ‘deceitful declaration’ supports a basis for revision, he said.

Hike in imposed taxes should not burden the business sector and small taxpayers, Perez assured. However, some businessmen reacted saying projects that arise from taxes should not also sacrifice their business.

The road-widening project being constructed has ‘disturbed’ 70% of the business establishments along Mc Arthur Highway. Councilor Leopold del Prado said a by-pass road must replace the project since a diversion road encompassing Binalonan, Asingan and Urdaneta will be in line in 2007 to avoid misunderstandings with the business sector operating in the affected area. # Jong de la Cruz for NORDIS
