Benguet SP names foundation day awardees LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (Nov. 19) — The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) this week announced this year’s awardees to the 104th Benguet Foundation Day celebration which will take place from November 22-26. Achievement awardees are Ireneo Dianso for Sports on Body building; Brendaly T. Bayacsan for Muay Thai Sports; Andy Colte for applied agricultural technology on cutflowers; and John F. Menzi for applied agricultural technology on rice production. Achievement awards are given in recognition of outstanding accomplishments in a specific field of endeavor projecting a good image of the province at various levels of governance. Everlasting awardees include Keiichi Ueno for Farmers Exchange program; and Kazuki Hemino for Agricultural Technology Services who voluntarily rendered social, economic and infrastructure services benefiting the province or two or more local government units and their respective communities. Two awardees were chosen for the leadership award, namely, Dr. Isikias “Ike” Picpican for cultural journalism; and Jerson Palaci Estero for sports for demonstrating qualities of leadership in their particular field with outstanding achievements or accomplishments projecting a good impression of the province. Special citations will also be awarded.. # Mari W. Cruz/PIA * * * * * Kapangan residents unite vs. drugs, marijuana LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (Nov. 19) —Kapangan residents teamed up with their local government units in a campaign against illegal drugs in their town, Kapangan Mayor Rogelio Leon said this week. Residents are now cooperating in tipping off identified illegal drug plantations in the area, he said. Kapangan Acting Chief of Police Darnell Dulnuan said four eradication activities were conducted when he was newly installed September this year. Dulnuan said the latest marijuana plantation discovered on November 16 in sitio Baguingey in barangay Sagubo costs about P10 million covering more or less 1.3 hectares.Dulnuan said police operatives of Kapangan burned the plantations. According to Dulnuan, the most significant apprehension, however, was a farmer who was cultivating more or less P1 million worth of marijuana seedlings in sitio Pacda, Sagubo. Appropriate court charges hasve been files against the said farmer in violation of RA 9165 otherwise known as Anti-Drug Law. # S.C. Aro/PIA-Benguet * * * * * Atok bridge inaugurated ATOK, Benguet (Nov. 19) — Akito bridge at Sitio Boneng, Brgy. Naguey here was inaugurated and finally turned over on November 4 to the residents. Akito bridge is the second bridge under the Presidents’ Bridge Program to be constructed in this town which costed P8,4 million. The amount of P5,642,327 was a grant from the national government through the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) while the P2,710,000 came from the Benguet provincial government as LGU counterpart. It is a 30 –linear meter double lane modular steel bridge. Farmers from the three municipalities particularly Brgy. Naguey of Atok, Brgy. Boklaoan in Kapangan, and Brgy. Lubo in Kibungan are expected to benefit from the construction of said bridge. Assistant Regional Director Patrick Unos of DILG-CAR told the beneficiaries to sustain the maintenance of the bridge having a life span of not lower than 50 years. Governor Borromeo P. Melchor who was also present during the inauguration solicited the people’s tax payment consciousness saying government could use taxes in the delivery of basic services and facilities. # Mari Cruz/PIA with reports from Catherine Monang – MLGOO Atok * * * * * Tuba asks Baguio to pay taxes for water use LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (Nov. 19) — The Tuba government asked the Baguio city government to pay to the equitable national wealth tax share from the proceeds derived from the operations of the three hydro-dam namely Hydro Nos.2, 3 and 4 all located at Asin, Nangalisan, Tuba. Resolution No. 196 series 2004 of the Sangguniang Bayan of Tuba dated September 28, 2004 states that Pursuant to Section 291 of the Local Government Code (LGC) of 1991, Baguio City being a government agency is liable to remit to the municipality an equitable share from proceeds derived from the utilization and development of water resources belonging to said municipality. The members of the Benguet Provincial Board to the Committee on Ways and Means during its regular session held on November 17 referred said resolution. # Mari W. Cruz/PIA * * * * * SLU student tops reg’l stat quiz BAGUIO CITY (Nov. 19) — A freshman Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) student from the Saint Louis University (SLU) will represent the Cordillera region in the national finals of the 13th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) which will be held in Manila on December 7. John Christian Valencia emerged as the winner in the regional elimination held last November 16 at the SLU Burgos Gym, besting 30 students from various schools in Baguio, Benguet, Abra and Ifugao. At the end of round 3, Valencia and schoolmate Jandie Ralph Esguerra, a nursing student, scored 26 all and had to go through one tie-breaking question to clinch the title. Romnick del Rosario, a first year civil engineering student from the University of Baguio (UB) came in third place with a score of 24. The three winners received plaques and P300 worth internet cards from Mozcom, and cash prizes at P2,000 (1st place), P1,500 (2nd place) and P1,000 ( 3rd place). The 2004 PSQ is the 13th of the series being conducted by the National Statistics Office. Since its inception in 1992, the Cordillera region has produced national champions in the persons of Daryl Abiog of SLU in 1999 and Sherwin de Leon of AMA Computer Learning Center, Baguio in 2002.#PIA-CAR * * * * * Coop hospital elects regular BOD BAGUIO CITY (Nov. 19) — The Baguio City Cooperative Hospital (BCCH), the first ever primary service cooperative in the Cordillera elected its first set of Board of Directors and Officers for the next two years. The BOD include Dr. Richard Arceo as Chair, Mr. Amado Jess Cendaña as Vice Chair, and Engr. Ernie Kumalao, Mr. Ericson Yang-ed, Mr. Luis Loy, Dr. Danilo Philip Torres and Dr. Ponciano Aberin as directors. The BOD, as well as the other cooperators including Ruel Custodio, Eric Calixto, Noli Vizcocho, Noel Nicanor Sison, Elena Tampican, Virgilio Cruz, Dr. Ruth Masilungan, and Engr. Isaias Lachica, are now going around the city and the nearby La Trinidad for the conduct of orientation on the BCCH among interested organizations. They have initially met with members of the Federation of Baguio Senior Citizens Association (FBASECA), SLU-SVP Housing, and the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA). On November 26, the group is set to meet with the members of the Federation of Senior Citizens in La Trinidad. Organized by the 15 cooperators from various professions, the coop hospital aims to provide medical and dental care and hospitalization services at a reasonable cost, encourage thrift and savings, and maximize the use of resources of members to alleviate economic standing. Dr. Arceo said this would be beneficial especially to those with existing medical problems. The members enjoy discounts for rehabilitation medicine, dental and optical services at the Foundation. Laboratory and other multi-specialty consultation services are also discounted at Dr. Danilo Torres’ clinic at the Metro Baguio Laboratories along Kisad Road. # PIA-CAR |
