77th IB holds CAFGU training in Benguet

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (Nov. 10) — The 77th Infantry Battalion of the 5th Infantry Division recently launched a two-week Citizen’s Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) refresher training class at Sitio Tarungoy, Wangal here.

Thirty-six out of the CAFGU Active Auxiliaries (CAA) joined the training.

The said training focused on the basic function and mission of a CAA. 77th IB Company Commander 2LT Marnel Maltu added that the training included discussions on human rights “because it is important for a CAA to know the rights of civilians”.

77th IB Commanding Officer Col. Celso Arcilla added that the said training would also prepare the CAA in helping the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) and local government units in rendering service to communities. # via NORDIS

Info drive on AIDS jumpstarted

BANGUED, Abra (Nov. 12) — The Provincial Health Office (PHO) here stressed the need for an information and education drive in preventing the spread of the Human Imuno-deficiency Virus (HIV). The POH confirmed two cases of AIDS-positive individuals in the province on the HIV/AIDS Consultation and Advocacy activity last week

Dr. James Piad, chairman of the Philippine National AIDS Council, explained that the virus can be spread in three ways. The highest risk is through unprotected sex with an infected person, use of contaminated blood through transfusion or contaminated instrument, and through infected pregnant women who transmit the virus to their unborn children. To avoid the virus, Piad strongly advised abstinence, sticking to one partner, protected sex, avoidance of prohibited drugs, and education or proper awareness.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Leonora Berona announced that the Abra Provincial Office is offers HIV-testing for a minimal fee of P3000. # Frank Asia/PIA-Abra

Baguio businessmen oppose SM walkway

BAGUIO CITY (Nov. 9) — Local businessmen and other stakeholders in the city announced opposition over the proposed SM walkway by the same establishment. If approved, the construction will only benefit one business entity, they said.

City Councilor Rocky Balisong meanwhile affirmed the proposal in a resolution. He argued that pedestrians will benefit from the walkway since vehicular accidents will be avoided.

Local businessmen explain that later on, the city government will have to maintain the walkway with taxpayers’ money.

Meanwhile, the city council suspended its deliberations on the issue pending comments from concerned agencies such as the Buildings and Architecture Office, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. # via NORDIS

Plebesito kaugnay ng pasailalim sa CDA binubuo ng BENECO

BAGUIO CITY (Nob. 10) — Kasalukuyang binabalangkas ng Benguet Electric Cooperative (BENECO) ng panuntunan para sa isang plebesito kaugnay ng balak na pagsasailalim dito sa pamumuno ng Cooperative Development Authority (CDA).

Ayon kay BENECO general manager Gerardo Versoza, tinatayang nitong Disyembre ay matatapos na ang mga alituntunin para sa isang referendum. Ito ay bunsod ng lumalakas na panawagan na makialam ang CDA sa operasyon ng BENECO.

Ayon naman sa mga miyembro, hindi pinangangalagaan ng BENECO ang kanilang interes dahil hindi sila kinokonsulta hinggil sa pagtaas ng babayarin sa kuryente. Wala rin umano silang maramdamang pagbabago sa kabila ng pribelehiyong tinatamasa nito bilang kooperatiba.

Systems loss ng BENECO sinisingil sa konsyumer

BAGUIO CITY (Nob. 11) — Sinabi ni Benguet Electric Cooperative (BENECO) general manager Gerardo Versoza sa Sanguniang Panlalawigan na ang pagpapataw ng systems loss charges sa mga konsyumer ang natatanging paraan upang hindi malugi ang kooperatiba.

Ayon kay Versoza, kailangan nilang gawin ito dhil hindi kaya ng BENECO na balikatin ito dahil hindi sapat ang kinikita nito.

Ang bayad sa systems loss umano ay ipinambabayad ng BENECO sa ibang obligasyon nito. Ang pinakahuli aniya ay ang P25 milyong ipinambayad sa natalong asunto ng kooperatiba. Lupang kinatitirikan ng CRA hall nanganganib mawala

BAGUIO CITY (Nob. 10) — Sinabi ni dating Benguet Vice Governor Edna Tabanda sa Sangguniang Panlalawigan na 4,000 sqare meters na lang ang natitira sa mahigit isang ektaryang lupain na kinatitirikan ng Cordillera Regional Assembly hall sa Harrison Rd., dito.

Natuklasan ng Igorot International Global Organization-Philippine Chapter na ipinoproseso ang naturang lugar para sa town-site sales application.

Ibinunyag din ni Tabanda na may nakapilang aplikasyon si Atty. Sergi Kawi sa Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) sa naturang luapin.

Hiniling ni Tabanda sa mga mambabatas ng Benguet na gumawa ng hakbang upang isalba ang nasabing lugar para sa mga estudyanteng mula sa mg lalawigan ng rehiyon na nag-aaral sa lungsod.

Matatandaang ang naturang lugar y dating kinatatayuan ng dalawang dormitoryo para sa mga katutubong estudyante ngunit noong nasunog ang mga ito ay pinalitan na ng CRA hall. # Joseph Cabanas/DzEQ
