DKK holds Itogon youth camp

BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 28) —The Dap-ayan ti Kultura iti Kordilyera (DKK) launched this month a three-day youth camp in Itogon, Benguet in support of National Peasant Month and the anti-mining struggles in the Cordilleras.

The activity took place in Brgy. Dalupirip, a community largely affected by corporate mining due to Philex Mines and Benguet Corporation. To date. Dalupirip remains affected by the construction and operation of the San Roque Multipurpose Dam. Dalupirip is situated along the Agno River.

DKK Chairperson Eric Carreon, said that each year, DKK hosts activities for the development of their cultural work and that of the communities as well. Participants, composed mostly of students from various Baguio colleges and universities, were taught to play various indigenous instruments such as the gangsa, tongatong, saggaypo, among others. Indigenous dances and songs were also studied and performed.

Carreon added that “As a cultural workers, DKK members study and understand the basic problems besetting the basic sectors of society. A member must experience the daily activities of the workers and farmers. Basic mass integration reflects on the development of performance as a cultural worker”, he disclosed. Carreon shared how, for the first time, they experienced how to plant rice together with Dalupirip peasants.

DKK member organizations Salidummay, Children of the Cordillera (CHICO), Ridaw, Aninag, and Artista ti Kordilyera iti Wayawaya (ARKIW) facilitated the said youth camp. # Marlon Gomarcho for NORDIS
