Solid waste mgt practices in Region I assessed BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 21) — An assessment of community awareness, adoption, and advocacy on solid waste management in Ilocos Sur and Pangasinan was concluded recently by the DENR-Region I to gather baseline data to formulate responsive solid waste management programs in the said areas. Residents of Candon, Ilocos Sur and Calasiao, Pangasinan requested for additional information, education, and communication (IEC) campaign on ecological solid waste management (ESWM) practices, according to the DENR. Results also showed that active LGU participation is essential in implementing and enforcing ESWM laws. The DENR assessment reported that waste recycling, waste segregation, and composting are highly adopted in Calasiao. Meanwhile, open burning in Candon City is still highly adopted. Most of the respondents said that waste segregation and composting were laborious and time consuming. Both towns had high advocacy level, according to the report. # Vella A. Atienza/ S&T Media Service * * * * * Baguio artists lauded BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 17) — The city government approved a resolution applauding Baguio-based artists Leonard Aguinaldo and Kawayan Thor Kalayaan de Guia for being named “Best Emerging Artist of 2004” and as one of the five “Juror’s Choice Awards” winners, respectively, in the recent 10th Asean Art Awards held in Bangkok, Thailand. Aguinaldo won for his artwork entiled God is on our side, taking home a trophy and $15,000 cash prize while de Guia’s Mystique of the Urban Mistake netted a $5,000 cash award. The winning artworks were among 35 entries from 7 participating countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Brunei, and the Philippines. # Ramon Dacawi * * * * * Cordi martial artists top world competition BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 21) — Two Cordillera martial artists underscored anew the region’s international competitiveness in combat events as they topped their respective division’s in the First World Peace King Cup Open Tournament this month in the United States. Robert Lee Bumina-ang of Ifugao finished off Germany’s Vol Gemir with a choke hold in the second round of the final bout to rule the middleweight class of the tournament that drew competitors from 10 countries and continents. Jerson Tesoro, a student from the Cordillera Career Development College (CCDC) upstaged US taekwondo national champion Luis Curreno to bag the lightweight title of the meet that allowed fighters to combine karate, taekwondo, judo, aikido, muaythai, wushu and boxing to chalk up points. Bumina-ang and Tesoro are both muaythai blackbelts. # Ramon Dacawi * * * * * Blocking ng nakaw na cellphones, epektibo — NTC BAGUIO CITY (Okt. 20) — Inihayag ng National Telecommunications Commission dito na umaabot sa apat kada arawna reklamo ang natatanggap nito kaugnay sa mga nakaw na cellphone mula nang buksan nito ang one-stop processing action center noong 2002. Napag-alamang mahigit 3000 kaso na ang inilapit para sa blocking mula 2002 sa NTC-CAR lang. Ito ay sa kabila ng usap-usapang maaaring ma-unblock ang isang cellphone na dati nang blocked ng NTC na mariing pinabulaanan ni Engr. Melanie Fernando, operations officer ng NTC sa rehiyon Cordillera. Ipinaliwanag ni Fernando na sa cellphone network pinuputol ang koneksyon kaya di totoong kayang i-unblock ito ng mga repair technicians. Sa isang kaugnay na balita, binigyan ng NTC ng hanggang Oktubre 24 ang mga repair shops, dealers at outlets na magparehistro sa NTC. # Robert Tabay/DzEQ * * * * * NFA Kalinga assures continued service to clients TABUK, Kalinga (Oct. 23) — The National Food Authority (NFA) here assured its clientele its continued service despite the impending rationalization plan of government to streamline, merge, or abolish some agencies and government-owned and controlled corporations. NFA Manager Alfredo Pagala revealed that the proposed rationalization plan is for the merging of NFA Kalinga, Mt. Province and Ifugao with Tabuk as the center. Pagala added that for three years now, corn producers have been trading their produce to private traders since they offer higher buying price. NFA’s Rolling Stores stopped its operations since prices of basic commodities they sell are higher than those sold in ordinary stores. Pagala said that the NFA has already penalized some 21 NFA-licensed wholesalers and retailers who are selling rice at the Bigasang Bayan at the same price with commercial rice. # Peter Balocnit/PIA-Kalinga * * * * * Health check at Ifugao jail held KIANGAN, Ifugao (Oct. 23) — Most inmates of the provincial jail here suffer from hypertension due to sedentary lifestyle and intake of protein-rich foods that elevate cholesterol level. This was disclosed by the Ifugao Provincial Health Office (IFHO) in a medical-dental mission at the provincial jail in observance of National Correctional Week this month. Sixty-nine inmates were given medical-dental attention in the said activity. The IFHO’s results were confirmed by jail guard Joan Nalliw who said that the prisoners are provided with protein-rich food thrice a week as part of their nutrition but that an exercise program was lacking. With the health check up, Provincial Parole and Probation Officer Greg Aberin expressed optimism that the inmates may have a “meaningful and productive file even behind bars.” # Daniel Codamon/PIA-Ifugao
