Cordillera workers unite for wage hike |
||
BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 17) — Workers here united this week to forge an alliance to push their petition for a wage hike. This was decided on a forum on wages by the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) and the Cordillera Labor Center (CLC). The forum was in support to the proposed legislation of House Bill 1063 popularly known as the P125 wage increase. In the forum, causes and impacts of the fiscal crisis to the nation as a whole and to the workers in particular were discussed. The regional labor situation of the Cordillera, where statistics on unemployment vis-à-vis employment in the Cordillera region was reviewed. KMU-Cordillera Spokesperson James Tulipa said the unemployment rate in the region worsened due to massive retrenchment recently. Workers in the region live by the P190 per day as the minimum wage implemented by the Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity Board (RTWPB) through the Wage Regionalization Act. He explained further the importance of the P125 wage increase campaign launched by KMU in the national and regional levels. He stressed the call on the dismantling of the regional wage boards, as the wage hike should be implemented across the board nationwide. Over 20 leader-workers attended the forum, representing various labor organizations in the city. # Aldwin Quitasol for NORDIS |
