D’ Rising Sun employees up in protest

BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 8) — Workers of D’ Rising Sun Trans aired their grievances as they planned to file a Notice of Strike at the National Conciliation and Mediation Board- Department of Labor and Employment-Cordillera Administrative Region (NCMB-DOLE-CAR).

The move was aborted but the workers vowed to continue their protest against the bus company.

According to one of the drivers who refused to be identified, drivers and conductors in the Baguio-Bontoc and Baguio-Tadian routes did not report for work thus paralyzing the trips.

The workers are complaining the non-payment of wages as their salaries were often delayed. Their employer even refused to register them to the Social Security System and PhilHealth. Aside from that, they have no meal allowances, overtime pay, service incentives and other benefits.

They tried to form a union before but it was immediately suppressed by the company.

UB law studes to host paralegal training

BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 8) — Law students from the University of Baguio-College of Law will hold a three-day paralegal training seminar on October 23-25 at the Villa Consolacion, here in Baguio City.

The students are members of the Public Interest Law Advocates (ADVOCATES) based in UB with a program of promoting public interest law service or developmental legal aid, academic excellence, and social involvement among its members. ADVOCATES is under the advisership of Atty. Pablito Sanidad and Atty. Karl Joris Dacawi.

The training is in partnership with the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) and the Cordillera Indigenous Peoples Legal Center (DINTEG). The FLAG is one of the pioneer human rights organizations formed by the late senators Jose “Ka Pepe” Diokno and Lorenzo “Ka Tani” Tañada at the height of martial law. It remains in its advocacy for the promotion and defense of human rights, provision of free legal services, research and education, among others.

The training is the first of an annual paralegal training seminar and a series of activities planned by the ADVOCATES. This will also serve in achieving its goal as a duly registered paralegal aid clinic in the region. FLAG National Chairperson Sanidad leads the trainers in the seminar, including FLAG lawyers Jun Viterbo, Chel Diokno, Glenda Litong, and Gilda Guillermo.

Topics include a discussion on basic human rights, developmental legal aid and the role of legal professionals, developments in substantive and procedural law such as jurisprudence on arrest, search and seizure; on the death penalty, and on evidence. Skills development will involve the writing of complaints and affidavits, on negotiations, investigation and documentation.

Cong. Satur Ocampo of Bayan Muna will discuss the current national situation and present challenges to the participants amid the need for wider advocacy for peoples rights. # Beverly Longid

Kaso ng paglabag sa karapatang pantao sa Kalinga, itinala ng CHR

BAGUIO CITY (Okt. 6) — Sa isang team visit ng Commission on Human Rights (CHR) sa Pinukpuk, Kalinga, iniulat ng nasabing tanggapan ang presensyang iba’t-ibang porma ng paglabag sa karapatang pantao.

Kabilang dito ang arbitrary at illegal detention, at pagpapasabog ng dinamita, ayon kay Marlene Palangdao ng CHR. Ayon sa kanya, madalang pa rin ang mga kasong naipipila laban sa mga kasapi ng sandatahang lakas na di umano’y responsible sa mga kaso ng pang-aabuso sa Kalinga. Luna science high, itatayo

BAGUIO CITY (Okt. 7) — Sinimulan ngayong linggo ang pagpapatayo ng gusali ng Luna Science Highschool sa Luna, Apayao matapos ang pagkabinbin ng naturang proyekto.

Ayon kay Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Director Remedios Taguba, sa sandaling magkukulang ang nailaang pondo ng DepEd ay may school board pa itong katulong sa paglikom ng pondo.

Proyektong crop institute sa bansa, itatatag

BAGUIO CITY (Okt. 8) — Malapit nang maitatag ang kauna-unahang semi-temperate crops institute sa bansa na matatagpuan sa Benguet State University (BSU). Nakatakdang maglaan ng pondo ang Belgian government para sa naturang proyekto sa halagang P25 milyon.

Ayon kay BSU President Rogelio Colting, ang proyekto ay bahagi ng Philippine Inter-University Cooperation Project ng pamahalaan ng Belgium. Inaasahang makumpleto ang proyekto sa loob ng limang taon. # Rowena Caccam/DzEQ

Consumer month launched in Abra

BANGUED, Abra (Oct. 8) — Consumer WelfareMonth (CWM) was celebrated this week at PAMORA Farms in nearby Pidigan of this province. Town officials welcomed members of the Abra Consumer Network (CAN) who benefited from a product demonstration on food processing at the venue.

The PAMORA Farms also breeds sasso chicken for egg and meat production, It produces home made chicken liver and gizzard pate which its management claims to be 70% organic.

Godofredo Gasa of the Center for Health and Develeopment (CHD)of the Department of Health-Abra commented that this year’s CWM theme on food and drug safety is “timely and appropriate with their present activities of monitoring drugstores against the sale of fake drug products. CAR lady Muay Thai fighter yields bronze in world cup

BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 8) — The Philippine team to the Muay Thai Queen’s World Cup brought home a bronze from the championship in Thailand last week.

Brendaley Tarnate Bayacsan is the first Filipino to bag the award in the said tournament. She competed under the 51 kg flyweight category with 18 opponents who vied for the record. Jessica Oyang, under the 48 kg pinweight category endeavored against her opponent but was ruled out by judges in a three-round bout. There were 14 contenders in her category.

Over 20 competing teams and 118 challengers vied for the gold during the Queen’s Cup, from Turkey, Korea, Philippines, United States, and the host country, Thailand. # Harold Domimnguez and Lydia Bayedbed

Student mental health clubs organized

BAGUIO CITY (Oct. 8) — The Baguio-Benguet Chapter of the Philippine Mental Health Association (PMHA) organized student mental health clubs in different highschools in their jurisdiction through its Lakas Isipan ng Kabataan (LINK Club).

The program aims to assist the youth to increase their coping capacities for effective day to day life.

The LINK Club aims to overcome the stigma attached to mental health as mental ill health. The students will conduct activities related to the development of a sound mental health thru educational activities, peer counseling, group dynamics, among others. At present, there are 33 LINK clubs organized in Baguio and Benguet.

The LINK Club is under PMHA’s Youth Life Enrichment Program (YLEP). # PMHA Baguio-Benguet
