BAGUIO CITY — The National Democratic Front of the Philippines warned that the aggressive strategies being pursued by the United States, including in the Asia-Pacific region, pose risks to Filipinos and the country.

“Within this framework, the Philippines has been increasingly transformed into a forward military base for US forces in the Asia-Pacific,” the NDFP’s International Office said in a March 15 statement. “The presence and expansion of US military bases on Philippine soil make the country a potential frontline target in the event of a direct confrontation between the US and China.”

It also accused the US and Israel of severe human rights violations and breaches of international humanitarian law when they launched their “war of aggression” against Iran.

The surprise February 28 attack on Iran on February 28, targeted military infrastructures, government facilities, and the country’s leadership, including the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran retaliated, launching missiles and drones against Israel and US military installations in the Gulf states.

“The large-scale air and missile attacks launched by the US-Israel war machine against Iran have devastated cities, killed hundreds of civilians, including children, and destroyed critical infrastructure such as schools and hospitals,” the NDFP International Office added.

In Northern Luzon, revolutionary groups in Cagayan Valley have raised concerns about the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites in the region.

EDCA sites in Northern Luzon include Naval Base Camilo Osias in Sta. Ana, Cagayan; Cagayan North International Airport in Lal-lo, Cagayan; and Camp Melchor de la Cruz in Gamu, Isabela.

Salvador Del Pueblo, NDFP Cagayan Valley spokesperson, warned of using the facilities “as a launching pad and our people as cannon fodder for US imperialist wars,” noting the region’s proximity to mainland China and Taiwan.

The group also highlighted increased joint military activities, such as exercises that have impacted local communities by imposing restrictions on fishing and farming in areas where drills took place. These locations include Claveria, Aparri, Gattaran, Sto. Niño, Baggao, Lasam, Calayan Island, Sta. Ana, and parts of Batanes.

Meanwhile, an ammunition storage facility and additional marine barracks and armory are being eyed at Camp Cape Bojeador in Burgos, Ilocos Norte. The province has been the site of several military exercises, including joint drills with US armed forces. The latest was the Philippine Navy’s four-day live fire exercise from March 7 to 10 in the waters of Burgos town.

National defense officials said that EDCA sites are not a threat, adding that the facilities are not used to launch or stage attacks against other nations. Authorities also maintained that the locations are not U.S. military bases and remain under the control of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. #nordis.net
