Dengue cases increase in CAR

BAGUIO CITY — Center for Health Development-Cordillera Administrative Region (CHD-CAR) reported an increase in Dengue cases during the regular kapihan at Departmen of Health (DOH) Regional Training Center, June 13.

According to Dengue Prevention and Control Program Local Health Systems Division, Regional Coordinator, Doctor Alexi Marrero based on their surveillance report, dengue cases in CAR listed 814 cases from January to June 8, 2013 with an increase of 2 percent and a record of three deaths in three provinces. One each in Mankayan, Abra and Kalinga.

Clustered cases were reported in eight barangays meaning three dengue cases occurred in one barangay within a period of four weeks, naming South Poblacion Bucay, Abra, Pinsao Pilot Project Baguio City, Loacan and Ucab in Itogon, Tabio in Mankayan, Otucan Norte and Sur in Bauko, barangay Libertad in Abulug Cagayan and adjoining the province of Apayao.

Age range of dengue victims from 12 to 16 years old. Twenty percent of the victims were 5 to 12 years old.

DOH is reviving the “Four O’clock Habit” campaign to stop the rising cases of Dengue in the country with the theme “Sugpuin ang Dengue! Mag Four O’clock Habit: Stop Look and Listen, Aksyon Barangay Kontra Dengue (ABKD) Pagtibayin. ”

Four O’clock Habit calls on everyone to stop at 4pm, look inside and outside their houses, search and destroy possible mosquito breeding sites and listen to barangay officials for proper ways of eliminating dengue.

Marrero added that in their surveillance conducted by CHD people are highly aware about dengue, however the increase of dengue cases is attributed to the people’s lack of vigilance. The Four O’clock Habit is calling the people to participate in eliminating possible breeding areas of the Dengue mosquito.

He said that fogging is only done when there is an impending outbreak or an outbreak, fogging is a last result to kill the dengue mosquito. # nordis.net
