Lagawe student to finish college thru summer job

LAGAWE, Ifugao — Grace Guihoman, an incoming fourth year student at the Ifugao State University (IFSU) is optimistic that she will finish her college education with the help of summer job. She is one of the 40 selected poor but deserving students employed by the local government unit (LGU) from the 20 barangays here this summer to earn for their tuition fees and other school needs.

Adonis Castisimo of the Mayor’s office said that this is in line with the program of Mayor Ceasario Cabbigat on education said each student will receive P210 a day for 20 working days a month, or a total of P4, 200. #

Kalinga gov’t monitors mercury polution

TABUK CITY, Kalinga — Governor Jocel Baac ordered a team to repeat water sampling of three rivers in the province earlier reported to have mercury content in efforts to arrest river pollution.

Baac tasked the Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) and the Office of the Governor to coordinate with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to take samples from the Chico, Pasil and Saltan rivers. Water samples gathered and tested earlier by EMB found traces of mercuryin these rivers. Mercury content ranged from .00287 to .1231 microgram per cubic meter which is beyond the standard measure .002. Baac atributed this to small scale mining activities in the areas upstream. #

Pedestrian lanes along highway pushed

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet — In order to ease traffic and minimize accidents, installation of pedestrian lanes may soon be strictly enforced in front of schools along highways.

Board Member Juan Nazarro Jr. introduced an ordinance on the installation of pedestrian lanes to protect school children and other pedestrians. It also includes the installation of traffic signs. It was noted that the lack of pedestrian lanes and traffic signs, pedestrians especially school children often cross anywhere and a number of pupils have been victims of vehicular accidents. #

Banaue training on electrical wiring

BANAUE, Ifugao — To enhance their capability to become economically productive and socially self reliant, out-of-school youths (OSYs) and young adults in Barangay Bocos here, are undergoing skills training on electrical wiring installation and values development from May 2-15, 2011.

Teresita Nawew, Social Welfare Officer 1 of the Local government Unit of Banaue said that the 15 days training will develop skilled and competitive workers in electrical wiring installation and prepare trainees for self and open employment to generate income. #
