Candies in Mankayan food poisoning expired, moldy — BFAD
LA TRINIDAD, Benguet — The health department ruled as expired and moldy candies and some snack goodies that downed more than 100 school children and a school teacher in a report recently released by the Bureau of Food and Drug (BFAD).
Quoting the BFAD report, Health Regional Director Myrna Cabotaje said the main problem was that the spoilt goods were not disposed of properly.
On November 28, last year, school children in Barangay Tabbac in Mankayan town saw sackfulls of the goodies among a heap of garbage along the national highway. Tempted by the goods, more than 100 children showed signs of food poisoning even leading most of them to a day in the dispensary.
Meanwhile Mankayan Mayor Manalo Galuten has earlier ordered the pullout of similar brands and type of junk food in village stores. He had asked the local police to continue monitoring village stores to warn of the display and sale of similar junk food.
Similarly, Benguet Gov. Nestor Fongwan has reportedly ordered the monitoring of all village stores in other towns to ensure the safety of the populace, especially children, who are easily hooked by the colorful packaging and product features. # Lyn V. Ramo
