PNP Chief continues campaign vs. erring cops

TUGUEGARAO CITY (Nov. 6) — Director General Avelino Razon Jr., Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, vowed to continue an unrelenting campaign against erring members of the police force involved in criminal activities.

The PNP chief said it will not be enough that PNP personnel involved in criminal activity be separated from the police service, they must also be punished for their crime just like ordinary criminals.

Razon acknowledged the fact that police personnel are often exposed to situations where abuse of authority and criminal misconduct can be committed especially for personal gain. He warned police authorities as he ordered a pre-charge investigation into the alleged irregularities involving some members of an anti-narcotics unit of the Manila Police District (MPD). # PIA Cagayan

Imported pest infests local coconut trees

DAGUPAN CITY (Nov. 7) — Some 4,000 coconut trees in Labrador here are being treated of brontispa infection, the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) said.

PCA Provincial Chief Eleazar Parohinog said that Labrador accounts for the biggest number of infected trees in the province by the flat slender beetle brontispa which feeds on the soft tissues of coconut fronds, enough to kill the tree.

The other affected areas are Urdaneta City and Sual. The beetle, which is not common in the country, was first detected in April 2005 Roxas Boulevard which is near the airport. Apparently, the pests were introduced here through importation of ornamental palms. # Dany Sagun/PIA-Pangasinan

Authorities say Pangasinan polls peaceful

DAGUPAN CITY (Nov. 7) — The barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections in the province last Monday went generally peaceful, according to authorities.

The only major concern which the Commission on Elections had to address was the lacking 1,258 ballots in the island town of Anda and 410 ballots for SK in San Carlos City.

Provincial election supervisor Reddy Balarbar said the ballots were lost in transit. He asked for replacements from the Comelec central office but the supplies did not come in time for the polls so he had to resort to the “sharing” system.

At least 18 disqualification cases, mostly complaints on residency, were filed in his office, 14 of which he said had already been recommended to Manila for disposition before the poll day. # Danny O. Sagun/PIA-Pangasinan
